Poetry in McGregor Festival 24 to 26 August2018, McGregor.
POETRY WRITING COMPETITION “THE SOUND OF WATER.”
The sixth Poetry in McGregor Festival 2018 will be held over the weekend of August 24-26. The festival organisers (The MAC Project) are happy to announce that there are wonderful highlights to be looking forward to this year. Some of the well-known poets that will be featured are Kobus Moolman, Galeo Saintz, Douglas Reid Skinner, Patricia Schonstein, Margot Luyt, Toast Coetzer, Erns Grundling, Joan Hambidge, and Lara Kirsten among others. There will also be open mic sessions for budding new poets and a school`s programme on the Friday for the surrounding Langeberg school children. The Poetry in McGregor Festival is unique for its wonderful setting and intimate venues, all within walking distance of one another. This is the ideal place to enjoy log fires, good wine and the company of poets.
Each year the Festival launches a nationwide competition inviting aspiring poets to reveal and share their talent. The theme for the 2018 competition is “The Sound of Water / Die Klank van Water.” ENTRIES CAN BE IN AFRIKAANS OR ENGLISH. There is a R5000 cash prize in the Open category and R2500 for the winner in the High-School category.
“The Sound of Water / Die Klank van Water” is also the overall theme of this year`s Poetry in McGregor Festival. Billy Kennedy, the founder of Poetry in McGregor, says that in this time of drought in the Western Cape, it felt apt to, apart from practical solutions, also pay attention to our thoughts and feelings towards it through poetry: “Water is unquestionably Earth’s most precious resource. Without it there would be no life, yet we over-use and abuse it, inflicting great suffering upon our waterways, seas and oceans. Poetry in McGregor Festival 2018 is seeking to inscribe a new set of water-values upon the human heart. We want to be reminded of the wonder of water. This year`s participating poets will help us raise awareness and gratitude for this ‘earth-blood’ through their presentations on the Programme and at the Open-Mic venues.”
Leila Witkin, who sponsors the annual prize money for the competition, says that this MAC Project initiative is close to her heart because South Africa is a multi-cultural community of budding untapped Poetic talent. “According to Robert Frost, 'Poetry is when an emotion has found it's thought and the thought has found words'. The Poetry in McGregor Festival gives the words of these aspiring Poets a voice. From this point forward everybody who has entered the competition is recognised by putting pen to paper and sharing their poems with us. It is now a question of them moving onward and upwards on their writing journeys.”
